Well, I would prefer to have someone who knows how to operate a locomotive running my self or stuff around the country. But yes, you must go through lots of training to be a locomotive engineer( train driver). You have to learn about trains, train operations, signals, tracks, switches, work orders, and a whole lot of other things!. It can be challenging to learn all of these things at once though.
