What sort of duties were men given to fill time during the day in World War 1?

Some men were sent to fetch rations and supplies from the rear, others refilled sandbags, repaired duckboards, cleaned the toilettes, or drained the trenches from mud and water.

During World War 1, men were mostly given duties in the military forces as either soldiers, pilots, spies and military doctors and nurses. Women in turn took up the task of production in the industries.
