The more words you read and hear will help you build your vocabulary. If you come across a word you do not understand, write it down. Then, look it up in the dictionary to get its meaning and an idea of words (synonyms) that may have similar meanings. Write some sentences using the word and look for it in your reading. In school, we all have had spelling lists, but for some this is torture. My feeling is having students find great words in their reading and bring them to share in class is worthwhile.

Semantic mapping is a vocabulary building strategy that helps make connections between related words by visually organizing them into categories or hierarchies based on their meanings and relationships. This can help learners see patterns and similarities among words, making it easier to remember and use them effectively.

The semantic mapping strategy involves making connections between a new word and related words or concepts to deepen understanding and retention. This can help learners create a network of meanings around the word for better recall and usage.
This strategy is called "semantic mapping" or "word association." It involves connecting new vocabulary words with words that are related in meaning to help strengthen understanding and retention. By identifying similarities and relationships between words, learners can expand their vocabulary more effectively.
