The Germans had a treaty to protect the Austro-Hungarian Empire in case of a war with Russia. The Russians went to war with the Austro-Hungarian Empire because they had a treaty to protect Serbia in case of a war with the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The Austro-Hungarian Empire went to war with Serbia because Archduke Ferdinand was blown up by a terrorist who favored Serbia.

Later the French and the British honored their treaties with Russia to protect them in case of a war with Germany. And so 15 or 20 million people died. Aside from that the Austro-Hungarian Empire was broken up into little pieces.

The spark of WW1 in Europe was the assassination of the Austria-Hungary archduke Franz Ferdinand. That led the European countries to declare war on eachother, then their allies had to get invloved, etc. But the sparks that led us to get involved were the sinking of the "Lusitania", a passanger boat that German U-Boats sank wthout warning. 128 American passangers died. Another spark was the Zimmermann telegram. This was a secret telegram sent from Arthur Zimmermann, a German man associated with the government (i forget how) to Mexico, asking them to form an alliance with them and attack America, even though we were neutral at the time. Germany offered them "the reconquering of lost land in america", meaning land like New Mexico, Arizona, etc. Luckily, Great Britain intercepted this telegram, informed us, and then we got so angry at Germany, we delcared war on them.
