I think that they ask it to be able to guage the personality of the applicant. Is she prideful or is she willing to be honest but open to criticisms.

this is recruitment favorite. All persons apply for employment, applying for progression etc should know what their main strengths are, what there weakness are and therefore what (strength) they bring to the role applied for and (weakness) where they see they need development to improve. The latter falls in to the category of knowledge for improving own learning and self development. Many recruiting specialists see knowing your own weaknesses as an actual strength as you can then define what needs to be done to improve in those aspects. Everyone has a strength and certainly everyone has a weakness. Its important not to dwell to heavily on that area as it can tell the recruiter that you are trying to put them off.
