In Chapter 4 of "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry," the men in the night attacked and severely beat Mr. Tatum because he had spoken out against some white men who were mistreating his family. The attack on Mr. Tatum was meant to silence him and intimidate him and his family into submission.
In "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry," the Wallace brothers tarred and feathered Mr. Berry, a black man in the community, as a form of punishment and intimidation. The act was a brutal display of racial violence and power against an innocent man.
The night men tarred and feathered Mr. Tatum. Mr. Barnett, the owner of the Mercantile, attempts to charge Mr. Tatum for more than he owes. Since Mr. Tatum disagrees with Mr. Barnett and accuses him of lying, the white men punish him by pouring tar on him and covering him with feathers.
