The peace had been signed between the north and south and Booth thought that with Lincoln dead the south would keep fighting and win. He also thought he would be seen as a hero for killing Lincoln. His diary reflects that in the 8 days he was on the run after shooting the President that he was surprised that he wasn't given more help nor seen as the hero he thought he would be. For most of the 8 days he was wet, cold and hid in the woods. The people he tried to get help from were not happy to see him even though they had supported the southern cause.
