Throughout your college (and perhaps graduate school, if you choose to go on) career, chances are you will receive a variety of long-term assignments. A long-term assignment can be anything that takes more than a few days to do. This an include a paper, a PowerPoint (or other sort of) presentation, and other things of that nature. When working on a long-term assignment, time management can be challenging. Here are some tips to help you succeed on your next long-term assignment. Make sure you understand all of the components of the assignment.Long-term assignments are typically more involved than, let’s say, doing a set of math problems for class the next day. Most professors will give you specific guidelines for what they want you to do. If you have any questions on what is expected (and when), be sure to clarify this with your teacher or TA. Keep a calendar. Keep a calendar of major dates associated with the project. Sometimes your professor will give you dates to turn things in before the final project is due (drafts of papers, presentation components, etc.). Other times, you may have to set your own deadlines along the way so that you do not save all of the work for the night before your project is due. Stay on track. Whether your professor gives you a calendar or you create one for yourself, it’s important to stay on track each day to make sure that you are not overwhelmed by work right before the project is due. Keep your calendar in a place that’s easy to locate (your phone, for example) and check in frequently to make sure that all of the work is getting done in the order that it needs to be accomplished. Double check everything. Shortly before the project is due, make sure to double-check that your work meets all of the components and requirements set forth by the professor (and proofread it!) so that you can be assured that you are turning in a project of the highest quality.
