If you have such reasons, such as an illness, you can file a motion for the court date to be changed. However, if the Judge finds out later that you weren't really sick, you would be in trouble.

Other acceptable reasons to offer to a judge:

Death in the family.

Need time to consult with an attorney.

Need time to prepare case.
