Pirates have existed throughout history and even into the modern day. The movie depictions of pirates, however, are not true to life. Pirates would operate much like any organized group of thieves with the singular goal of robbing a target. If this involved killing the crew of the ship they attacked, then it would. They also had little hesitation in selling off captured persons as slaves.
