There was a rumor surfacing around 1994 - 1995, when Aaliyah's debut album 'Age Ain't Nothing But A Number' was released that R. Kelly was messing around with Aaliyah. Vibe Magazine published a copy of the marriage license between the two in 1995, showing that Aaliyah had listed her age as 18. While the world really never knew the entire details, a lot of people believe that R. Kelly could of persuaded Aaliyah to falsely alter her age because at the time she was only 15 years old... just so the marriage could take place. Whether the accusations were true or not, Aaliyah and R. Kelly quickly and quietly had this alleged "marriage" annulled some time in 1995.

Afterwards Aaliyah separated from R. Kelly musically and creatively and teamed up with the then unknown Missy Elliot and Timbaland for work on her sophomore and final studio albums; One In A Million released in 1996 and Aaliyah her final album released in 2002.

She was engaged to ex Roc-A-Fella member Damon Dash after dating for about a year and they planned to wed in the Spring of 2002, but due to her death on August 25, 2001 the marriage between Damon and Aaliyah never happened.

NO ONE [ but Aaliyah's family and maybe her closest friends] will ever know what went on between her and R Kelly in the mid- 90s. And there is really no need to worry and stress over it now because Aaliyah is deceased. Whatever happened between them, if anything at all, was laid to rest and they both moved on and became big successors in their musical careers.

I personally don't know if any of it is true, because while media and news stations and newspapers were claiming the ring on Aaliyah's finger was a "Wedding ring" the ring was later actually confirmed to be the one that her Great Grandmother [Mintis Hicks] had passed on to Aaliyah not too long before she died.

I believe they were good friends.
