A licensed massage therapist can only do acupuncture within a certain scope. One must become registrants of the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists in order to provide clients with a full-breadth acupuncture care.
If you want to do massage therapy professionally you will need a license. There are different designations in different parts of the country and in different states. You may be a licensed massage therapist (LMT), a certified massage therapist (CMT), a licensed massage and bodywork therapist (LMBT), or just massage therapist.

Certified - completed a course and got some cert of learnings. Licensed - Registered with an Association eg the New Zealand Massage Association, paid afflilation yearly, and some back up support offered to the practioner.
There is no such thing as a massage therapist assistant, at least I never heard of one. I will assume you are referring to a massage therapist that is not yet fully trained and licensed. Depending on your local laws where you live, that may or may not be legal.
