No, because auto-opening knives are banned by the U.S. military and have always been, even if you're off duty. Pocketknives are legal, including lock-blades...however auto-opening (ie; switchblades) are most definetely illegal. Other than looking cool, they aren't any better, after all...how long does it take to flick open any knife...perhaps a nanosecond? I used a small Schrade Old Timer with a 4" blade when attacked by a group of Mexican thugs once. They wanted my watch and my wallet. They got neither, thanks to my trusty Old Timer. It appears if you can take out the first guy, the rest scatter like roaches when you turn on a kitchen light. Perhaps they're only comfortable robbing tourists who don't fight back. Dirty bastards! As for civilians, I don't know. Perhaps someone familiar with Illinois law can assist. Da Beaz (on vacation in New Zealand)

It is legal for you to carry an assisted opening knife but not a switchblade. An assisted opening knife does not have a button but does have a spring, you slightly open the knife and then it opens the rest of the way for you.Remember it has to be under 5.5 inches.
3 3/4 inches with no spring assisted opening blades.
