Yes.

While the first poster is technically correct in that it is possible for a 10 year old and a 12 year old to "go out", the reality is that neither child is going to be socially, emotionally, or intellectually mature enough for anything approaching a mature relationship. Unfortunately, they may both be physically mature enough to do things that they are not socially, emotionally, or intellectually mature enough to handle. Such young individuals are subject to something like the Dunning-Kruger effect.

Kruger and Dunning proposed that, for a given skill, incompetent people will:

1. tend to overestimate their own level of skill; (sound like any kids you know?)
2. fail to recognize genuine skill in others; (grownups just don't understand kids you know - or they don't understand how kids feel.... Riiiigggghhhttttt!)
3. fail to recognize the extremity of their inadequacy; (they are too inexperienced and know too little to realize how inexperienced they are and how little they know)
4. recognize and acknowledge their own previous lack of skill, if they can be trained to substantially improve. (fortunately this is not necessarily the case when the problem is just being "young and dumb")

Can a 10 year old "go out" with a 12 year old - yes. Should they be trying to establish that kind of relationship - NO!
