Yes, hanging was the prescribed method. it was not abolished until I believe around l963. a female convict was hung in the late fifites at the oddly-named Strangeways Prison. There were a number of very controversial cases such as the (let Him Have it!) case where a youth shot a police officer when the Cop ordered him to give him his Gun- the suspect thought( from War films, obviously ) that (let Him have it!) was a command to shoot! odd defence indeed.
