In most states, you would need to obtain a CDL (Commercial Drivers License). Many schools and bus companies will help you learn to drive if you have passed the written test, had your physical and have CPR certification. For your financial well being, you should also obtain your GED and then it is something you no longer have to worry about.

Yes, you need one to drive even a small school bus. Any vehicle designed to transport more than 15 persons (including the driver) requires a CDL of the class appropriate to the vehicle (C for vehicles under 26,000 lbs., B for single vehicles over 26,000 lbs. GVWR, A for combination vehicles over 26,000 lbs. GVWR in which the vehicle in tow has a weight rating of greater than 10,000 lbs) with a passenger endorsement. In the case of a school bus, you must have an "S" endorsement, as well, which is essentially a passenger endorsement with the added requirement of a criminal background check.
