I can't believe that any permit is necessary. As a military officer, I carried my sword to weddings without any problem, and with all the reenactors in the area no one is going to give you any trouble.

It depends on the state. For instance, Tennessee issues a "handgun carry permit" which covers only handguns and nothing else. Florida issues a "Concealed Weapons Permit" which covers any non-prohibited weapon.
