It really depends on the company you're looking to start out with. If, say, you're looking at doing OTR expedited stuff, they'll expect some sort of formalized training. But if you're looking to work for a municipality, they'll often hire someone on with the requirement that they get a CDL within a set amount of time, and will offer OJT training. The biggest benefit to school is that it provides you with access to vehicles and trainers... if you go on your own to get a CDL, you'll need to make arrangements for this. In reality, provided you had the access to what you needed for the pre-trip and road test, you could even get a Class A without school.
If you are going to go to school for a Class B, then you might as well go all out and get a Class A.
