In the USA cranes must be inspected on a rigorous schedule. This inspection is supposed to be done by a person with professional knowledge of their operation, maintenance and structural integrity. Just because you own a crane doesn't mean you can inspect and certify it.

First of all the frame and any load bearing castings, forgings and structural materials must be inspected for cracks, corrosion or overloading. The engine and complete drive train must be in good working order. All running and standing rigging, hooks, and blocks have to be defect free. The boom, gantry, jib and other load holding structures must be free from cracks, twists, dents, and corrosion, and show no signs of failure. The outriggers, tracks, wheels, rollers, tires, sub-frames, flanges and house bearings must be in good working order and free from defects.

The crane must be equipped with a full set of capacity charts covering every concievable configuration of parts of line, selection of hoist, boom, counterweight, and outriggers.

Brakes, dogs, and frictions, along with all their operating systems must be fully inspected. All lights must function. All gauges and controls must function. The list go on...................

Next, a load test must be performed with the boom length it is designed to use. The test will be conducted at various radiuses, boom angles, and lengths in each quadrant the crane was designed to operate.

Trust me on this------I was once one of these people (now retired) What I've written here is generic and can not be specifically applied to ANY crane. You definitely have to consult with a professional. You'll find good ones by asking the people who employ them most---A reputable crane rental company. Good luck and God bless.
