You can try to contact your local chapter of the state Bar Association. If you wish to file a documented complaint, the state Bar Associations have an Office of Ethics which will investigate. If not, you can always file suit against the attorney in court to recover your retainer. Unless you report the attorney to law enforcement for "fraud" or "mis-appropriation of funds" or some similar offense, there is no agency that will investigate, for free, or otherwise.
Contact your local temporary employment agency. Many times if you start a job through the agency and work for a couple days or weeks (depending on the company), they will hire you outright.
The Better Business Bureau is not the licensing agency for Attorneys. You should call your local Bar Association and confirm the license of an attorney and inquire about any suspensions, censures, or disciplinary actions that may be on the attorneys professional record. The BBB is merely a consumer protection agency. It bares no lawful or administrative powers. You could consider the BBB to be the mother of Yelp.
One can look for an attorney in California by first narrowing down the area in which one would like to find an attorney. Then a good place to start is the Chamber of Commerce of the targeted city or town because that city agency will have a list of reputable attorneys for one to begin to contact.
The US Attorney General is in charge of the Department of Justice (DOJ). Although one of the original four cabinet positions in 1789, the Attorney General was not the head of an official agency until the Justice Department was created in 1870, to consolidate the legal roles of the US departments and the United States Attorneys.
It's my understanding the prosecuting attorney represents the people when the accused is brought to court on criminal charges. Private attorney's represent the defendant in arguing why the accused person is not guilty, or if there were mitigating circumstances making circumstances explaining why they did what they did.Additional Information: (in the US) Private attorneys do NOT prosecute criminal cases, they are prosecuted by government attorney's (prosecutors) who do so on behalf of the "people."Defendants are free to retain their own 'private' attorney to represent them or, if indigent, they are afforded the services of the Public Defenders Office (a taxpayer supported agency).

No federal agency - but you can contact your local or state Bar Association. They will investigate complaints against attorneys. === === If a crime such as fraud has been committed, then the US Attorney can assist in investigating such matters. The Bar Association and the Disciplinary Commission only advise the attorney of wrong doing, but they do not reprimand unless it is gross misconduct. Start with the Disciplinary in your area, every state has one, then cc to Bar and US Attorney office if necessary.
In my experience, restraining orders and domestic violence injunctions are served by the Sheriffs Office or other law enforcement-associated agency. They are not served by private individuals, attorneys included.
Each StATE HAS A CHILD SUPPORT AGENCY. THE STATE'S ATTORNEY/DISTRICT ATTORNEY ALSO HAS CHILD SUPPORT ENFORCEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES.
If you are being sued, you will always receive a summons. Sometimes it is delivered by a process server sometimes by registered mail. A collection agency telling you, you are being sued, does not necessarily make it fact. Only attorneys can file suit and they have to adhere to the state laws where the person resides. A collection agency cannot sue you regardless of what they claim. Sorry, I should add you need to be aware of the difference in collection agency and collection attorney. For instance Mann-Bracken LLC, are collection attorneys and/or arbitrators. They can initiate a lawsuit.
The courts can do this, as well as the State child support agency.
