Whereas the Emancipation Proclamation had ended slavery in the states which were rebelling against the Union as of January 1st, 1863, the 13th Amendment ended slavery throughout the United States, even in the border states which had remained loyal to the Union. Without slavery, the plantation system came to an end, being replaced by the sharecropping system. Between the end of the war and the end of Reconstruction, African Americans had equal rights as citizens, many being elected to Congress as well as state offices. When Reconstruction ended, many former Confederate states passed Jim Crow Laws that, once again, restricted freedoms of people of color, but, even then, slavery was not reintroduced because it was constitutionally prohibited.
