There was a sense of legality and justiice involved in the proceedings. Women sought equal treatment, so they hanged Mary Surratt. Prohibiition vibes were beginning so Atzerodt who failed to assassinate the Vice President and instead spent the night boozing was hanged.

Animal rights advocates may have been pleased to note that Edmund Spangler only got six years for holding Booth's horse and "Peanuts" Burroughs who held the same horse was not charged. The AMA could be placated by not hanging Dr. Mudd, but a life sentence may have been a little harsh. Pumphrey who rented Booth the horse was not charged, and that suited small business. Booth of course was never tried, having been "shot while resisting apprehension" in a barn that was burning around him.
