The names of pirate ships were often directly related to the trade they were involved in and what they did for a living. Sometimes there were ships that were named for fantasy sea creatures, or gods/goddesses. There really was no one specific thing that pirate ships were named for...sometimes the ship kept the name that it had when it was captured. The same as anyone else -- they would call them after people they admired, or after flowers or animals or winds, or anything their imagination suggested, or simply keep the previous name of the ship they had acquired, whether by legal or illegal means.
