How do lawyers charge their clients?

Injury attorneys can be paid in multiple ways. Some attorneys may require an upfront retainer fee, and then bill for additional hours spent on a case. Other attorneys agree to charge nothing up front, and are paid based on a percentage of the settlement that is won.

As a lawyer, I do not have a set price list for billing clients but I do charge by the hour. My rate is typically $200 per hour-though I am flexible depending on my clients ability to pay etc. Firstly, I offer a 'free consulation'. You tell me the problem and I give you the options and an estimated cost of each option. For example, if you were arrested for assault, I would listen to what you say occurred and would tell you your options from fighting the charge, to accepting no contest etc. Obviously, the more complex a case and the longer it takes to resolve will cost more money. Calling expert witnesses, going through paperwork, filing documents all takes time and money-expert witnesses are usually paid and you usually pay someone to locate such an expert. Filing papers also cost money to do. So all-in-all each case can be different. I estimate the amount of time each case would require, sometimes it is a quick letter, a court date is many hours of preparation and work. So usually most lawyers can only provide a ballpark figure as an estimate.
