Some pirates did go to extreme lengths to hide their stolen goods, but most did not accumulate vast treasure as in fictional books and movies. Generally they were seagoing criminals and thieves, and some were more ruthless and murderous than others.

The "treasure maps" of pirates hold a great allure in adventure fiction, because some treasure troves did exist in remote locations, as an "insurance policy" for a pirate captain who retired or fell on hard times. Many Caribbean islands and tropical coasts have legends of pirate treasure buried on them, but most either never existed or were found long ago.
