Bottom line - Must be at least 23, a U.S. citizen or a citizen of the Northern Mariana Islands, four year degree, three years professional work experience, valid driver's license, available for assignment anywhere the FBI has jurisdiction. Must qualify in one of the following - Accounting, Law, Language, Computer Science/IT, Diversified.

You don't - like any new FBI employee, you must first get through the initial application, interview, and polygraph process. After that, you still need to go through the extensive and thorough Background Investigation, which covers every aspect of your life, including friends, family, financial, medical, legal, educational, and social history and records.

If you get through those, you still need to qualify for the physical requirements of being an FBI Special Agent. When that's completed, you still need to get through the selection process for the Academy. Typically though, the polygraph test is the biggest selection filter, and if you can pass that, you're usually on your way. They won't even start the BI process until the polygraph test is passed.

The hardest part is passing the polygraph test, as the failure rate is extremely high. For the BI, you need to be essentially squeaky clean in all aspects of your life. The only exceptions are if you're prior military and have special skills that are desirable for the Bureau, but in those cases, Agents and employees are generally recruited specifically by the FBI.
