(in the US) In many (most?) County and State-level courts the Bailiffs are Deputy Sheriffs and in many municipal courts the Bailiffs are municipal police officers. Still other court systems still employ civilians as Bailiffs, but with the escalating trend of violence seen in courts, civilian positions, in many cases, are being replaced by law enforcement officers (see above) or by those who possess special qualifications for the job (ability to be armed) such as retired law enforcement or military personnel. In Federal Courts most Bailiffs are Deputy US Marshals.
