Shoplifting is simply the illegal act or attempt of stealing from a business, particularly a business in the retail industry, such as a grocery store, clothing store, or any other type of merchandise store.

An example would be entering a store with an empty bag, then secretly placing merchandise into that bag, and then proceeding to leave the store with no intention of paying for the items within that bag.

Shoplifting is illegal within every state of the United States and for that fact in most, if not all of the World.

Some Shoplifters can be classified as Kleptomaniacs, which is a psychological term for someone who is compelled to steal, usually objects of little or no value. kleptomaniacs do not necessarily contemplate the value of the items they steal and are usually compelled to steal without any motive of any kind.
