In the United States there is no general statutory code regarding religion. The important factor in founding a recognized religious denomination is acquiring tax exempt status.
The IRS will recognize a religious group as tax exempt if it meets two general guidelines:
New York City officially recognizes over 30 genders.
Roman-Catholics.

As an example, a same-sex civil partnership formed in the United Kingdom is legally recognized as a civil marriage in New York state. It could only be recognized as a religious marriage if it were performed by the clergy of a denomination which permits same-sex couples to marry.
Catholics make up the largest single denomination.
Humanistic Judaism is new as an organized group (it began in 1963), and while other non-orthodox sects refrain from officially condemning it, they generally do not see it as a religious denomination, but more of a social denomination. Due to the high rate of intermarriage, and the lax rules for conversion (in some cases non-existent), most individual Jews of other sects do not recognize humanistic Judaism as valid. Some Jewish sociologists believe that in a few generations, the members of humanistic Judaism won't even identify themselves with mainstrain Judaism.
A new religious group or denomination was created in England after the restoration of the monarchy. It was called the society of Friends and also the Quakers. Some of their religious ceremonies were intense and members "quaked" thus the term Quakers. This new sect quickly became the object of persecution by the Church of England.
