How does one request information under freedom of information?

Some entities have forms available that you can use to request FOIA information from them. You'd have to call the entity to find out. If they do not, you simply prepare a letter with the necessary information.

Anyone can make a request for information under the Freedom of Information Act. The Act makes no distinction between requests from people who are citizens of, or who are currently in the UK, Europe or any country in the world. All requests must be treated the same, irrespective of the country of origin.

Requests for information may be in any form and don't need to mention the Freedom of Information Act, but they must:

• be in writing
• give the applicant's name and a return address
• describe the information that is requested

1. Determine exactly the information you want.
2. Determine exactly the agency in the federal government that has the information you want.
3. Write a letter stating that you are making a FOIA request for that specific information to that specific agency's FOIA office.
4. Wait for a reply (this must happen within 20 days).
5. When you receive the reply you will either be turned down or placed in the queue. If turned down you must start an appeal to continue.
6. Now that you are in the queue, wait (this can take years, there is no set time limit).
7. If turned down or the documents supplied are unsatisfactory, appeal.
8. Wait more!

Note: if you are not in certain categories of requesters (e.g. reporters, writers) who get documents free automatically, you will have to pay for copying costs, research time, evaluation of classification status and redaction of the documents, etc. (one document I requested they told me would cost $500)

Any errors or failures on your part in steps 1, 2, or 3 will delay your request or result in it being turned down simply because the documents described are not held by that agency (such documents may be elsewhere), and the agency is not required to "correct your error".
