Compulsory process in the courts is essentially the court's subpoena power. This power enables a court to compel people who have information relevant to a civil or criminal action to appear in court and either give testimony or provide demonstrative evidence in aid of the parties involved in the action.

It is accomplished by the issuance of a subpoena by a court or by an attorney in the name of the court. The subpoena is served on the person whose appearance is desired and a small fee is paid to him/her. At that point the person is compelled to answer the command of the court to appear at the place stated in the subpoena on the date and at the time indicated.

In addition to the subpoena power, courts sometimes issue orders to show cause or other types of orders to people involved in litigation to compel their attendance or participation in court related matters.
