How many did the Zodiac kill?

The Zodiac Killer was a serial killer who operated in Northern California in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The Zodiac murdered victims in Benicia, Vallejo, Lake Berryessa and San Francisco between December 1968 and October 1969. Four men and three women between the ages of 16 and 29 were targeted. Numerous suspects have been named by law enforcement and amateur investigators but no conclusive evidence has surfaced. The killer coined the name "Zodiac" for himself in a series of taunting letters sent to the local Bay Area press.

Officially there are 5 confirmed murders that are attributable to the Zodiac Serial Killer of Northern California. On December 20, 1968 Betty Lou Jensen and David Faraday were shot to death on Lake Herman Road in Benicia, California. On July 4, 1969 Darlene Ferrin and Mike Mageau were shot in the Blue Rock Springs Golf Course parking lot in Vallejo, California. Ferrin died but Mageau recovered. On September 27, 1969 Cecelia Ann Shepard and Bryan Hartnell were stabbed repeatedly on what is now known as Zodiac Island at Lake Berryessa, California. Shepard died and Hartnell survived. On October 11, 1969 San Francisco Yellow Cab driver Paul Lee Stine was shot in his cab point blank in the head.

In his March 13, 1971 letter to the Los Angeles Timesnewspaper, Zodiac acknowledged that the murder of Cheri Jo Bates on October 30, 1966 in Riverside, California had just recently been discovered to have been done by him. However, the fact that this murder was committed by the Zodiac is disputed by the Riverside Police Department. In his letters, Zodiac ultimately claimed 37 kills.

Chances are good that all of the Zodiac's victims will never be attributed to him. There are five murders and two attempted murders. There are far more victims suspected to be the Zodiac's, but until more evidence turns up they will only be suspected.
