Added: You sholuld check with your state of residence. Of the ones I am aware of you must qualify for the CCW by demonstrating proficiency in the type of weapon you intend to carry (e.g.: you may not qualify with a revolver and then carry a pistol instead).

It depends on where you are. In the U.S. each state sets its own rules.
