Its hard to speculate that number since piracy (as in ocean borne pirates) have been around since people have been able to navigate the oceans on ships -- were talking thousands of years here, if you narrowed your scope down to specific time period and location you'd proably be able to look up that answer...

It is unlikely the true number will ever be known. Some ships simply disappear others may have been sunk or taken by pirates but the true facts are not always reported accurately because in either case there were no survivors.
