In the U. S. House of Representatives, 29 states have Republican majorities. In the lower house of states' governments, there are also 29 states with Republican majorities.
The majority leader of the House of Representatives is chosen by his or her colleagues through a leadership election system. If the Democratic Party holds a majority of seats in the House, then the election is conducted by a body known as the Democratic Caucus, which is comprised of all sitting members of the House who are also members of the Democratic Party. If the Republican Party commands a majority, then the Leader of the House is chosen by the House Republican Conference, which is similarly comprised entirely of Republican members of the House. In many instances, when one party gains control of the House from another, they will elect their Chief Whip to the leadership rather than their former minority leader, who usually goes on to serve as Speaker of the House.
For the 2012 Presidential Contest, a Republican nominee for President must have 1144 delegates vote for them on the first Presidential ballot at the Republican National Convention, since that is a simple majority of 2286 delegates.
