Landlord & Tenant Law offers rent-to-buy apartments
Homes to rent and homes to lease are very similar. Homes to rent you rent them for a week, a month or whatever you agree on withyour landlord. Homes for lease is pretty much the same but some lease to own has an option to buy the place you are renting.
Normally there is no such thing as Rent to Own of a dwelling. Usually it's rent with option to buy. The amount of money paid in rent may or may not count toward the costs of ownership. This all depends on the term of the lease. The Landlord has the right to decide not to sell the property at any time during or after the lease period.
You should contact a landlord-tenant agency in your area. There must be many more important details. You can explain your situation and get an opinion of whether you have a valid case against the landlord. But you cannot decide to withhold rent on your own.
You can't rent it you can only buy it.
The divorce has nothing to do with the landlord-tenant relationship. And, if there is a lease, and the rent is getting paid, there is no reason to evict. If the rent is in arrears, the landlord should serve the tenant a 14-day notice to quit, then (if needed) buy a summons and complaint from a court and have it served by a constable.
Not sure why this would be a landlord/tenant issue, since the landlord can sell to anyone he or she wants and the tenant simply continues paying rent, but to a different landlord. The only "notice" required would be when the new landlord wants the rent sent to a different place or wants to change the terms of the tenancy (usually with 30 days prior notice, unless otherwise specified in a lease).
The landlord is usually only responsible for negligent damage, not fire or disaster. You can buy renter's insurance to cover your furnishings.

£9.99 to buy. £3.49 to rent.
Buying an apartment complex is one thing; charging rent is another. No one can force a landlord to allocate any rent received to go toward the loan payment for the complex owner.
