This is from the NYS Police Traffic Safety FAQ: "The New York State Police does not determine the amount of any fine that might be charged if a motorist is convicted of a traffic offense. There are minimum and maximum penalties that are established by law, and the judge presiding over the case will make the final determination of any penalty to be imposed. Questions regarding potential penalties should be referred to the Court having jurisdiction over the specific case."

You should look on the part of the ticket that says "This matter is scheduled to be handled on the appearance date below" and see what jurisdiction he was in and look for the fines for that particular traffic court. It also depends if it was your first conviction and a guilty plea carries points on the license.

However...as a guideline in NYS the Minimum and Maximum are as follows: 1 - 10 mph over = $45 min - $150 max (no imprisonment) 11 - 30 mph over = $90 min - $300 max (0-15 days imprisonment) 31 + mph over = $180 min - $600 max (0-30 days imprisonment) Speed not prudent = $45 min - $150 max (0-15 days imprisonment) Failure to reduce = $45 min - $150 max (0-15 days imprisonment).
