A lawyer is not legally obligated to work unless ordered to by a court (public defender etc)

However he/she would not be very productive unless they represented clients at their court dates. Which of course limits their vacations to when a client does not have an active court case. Some Lawyers will use colleagues to fill in for them while they are out of office.
