In the U.S. you must be 21 or older by federal law to purchase a handgun from a licensed dealer. However, a person who is eighteen may purchase a handgun from an individual or have one given to him or her by a family member or other unless state law forbids this type of transaction. An eighteen year old may buy, own, carry, possess, shoot, transport, sell, and use a handgun to defend them self unless state or local law prohibits it. Concealed carry is another matter. One generally has to be 21 (or in the case of Missouri, age 23) to have a concealed carry permit. A few states allow veterans under 21 to obtain concealed carry permits. Federal law prohibits all sellers from selling a handgun to someone who is not a resident of the same state and buyers are prohibited from importing the handgun across state lines in such a transaction.

Ammunition for handguns may only be sold to those over the age of twenty one. Most common calibers of ammunition are used by both handguns and rifles which greatly weakens the effect of this law.
