I admit that it is a common practice - most often used to get the just-purchased vehicle back to the new owners' home. HOWEVER - it IS technically unlawful to do so. The instant the sale is completed both the original owner's license tags and their insurance coverage ceases whether you have notified them of the sale yet, or not.
