This service ensures the proper running of the judicial system which keeps disputes from becoming violent and keeps a criminal defendant's Constitutional right to a jury trial intact. It is not a right, because you cannot insist that on serving on a jury if you are not qualified. Even if you are qualified, you may not insist on staying on a jury against the rights of the parties in interest in the law suit or criminal prosecution should they want to dismiss you from the jury either for cause or on a peremptory challenge.

I would say that in the abstract you have a responsibility to serve on juries in order to see justice done. If you are actually called as part of a jury pool and are selected to serve, it then becomes a duty in that it is now compulsory for you to serve (barring being excused for a good cause).
