In the U.S., elections are held in November, on the first Tuesday of the month that falls after the first Monday (that is, election day cannot be the first day of the month.)

The public "votes for President" in November (the day after the first Monday), but they are actually electing members to the electoral college in that election. The electoral college casts the votes for President (and Vice President) in December.

The public also votes for President in the primaries, the months of which depend on the state, with the earliest being in February and the latest in June. Those elections determine which people will the the major party presidential nominees.
