The U.S. president who signed the bill making Alabama a state was James Buchanan. Alabama was admitted to the Union as the 22nd state on December 14, 1819. Buchanan served as president from 1857 to 1861, but the admission occurred long before his presidency. The admission was actually signed into law by President James Monroe.
