Is hitch hiking illegal

It depends on where you are at, what might be legal in NYC could be illegal in Buffalo. Likewise the laws governing hitchhiking on state roads and state or federal highways are differ. For example,there are parts of CA. highways that a person can hitchhike on, but they cannot do so on any exit or entrance ramps (for obvious reasons).

In some states it is, such as Utah. In some countries it is, for instance in Cuba where it is mandatory to pick up hitchhiking Cubans, but illegal for foreigners to hitch. This doesn't stop some folks from doing it.

That depends on the area.

In general, American law only prohibits hitchhikers from standing in driving lanes, but allows them to stand on the shoulder or sidewalk of a road. US States have the right to restrict pedestrians and hitchhikers from entering certain highways, but must post a sign if this is the case.

(in the US) I don't believe that it is actually lawful to hitchhike in any state.
