If you're doing so in order to collect insurance money, then yes, it's illegal. However, if you're doing so simply in order to demolish the house and clear the land for future construction, it might or might not be legal depending on local air pollution ordinances. At the very least you'd want to check with your local police department so you didn't get accused of attempting to commit insurance fraud. It would probably be a good idea to alert the local fire department as well... they'll probably want to supervise the burn so that it doesn't spread.

It is illegal to burn materials that produce excessive or noxious smoke. Dwellings can contain asbestos, various types of siding, plastics, paint and other materials that would produce harmful smoke. Also, if you are close to other buildings you are endangering others. The fire could easily get out of control, spread and damage neighboring properties and people.

You should contact your local fire department for information regarding demolition permits and what you can and cannot do to demolish the building.
