It depends on the policy of the salon, and if said policy was explained when you booked the appointment. A lot of places require you to have a credit card held on file for such an occasion, especially in the case the client never shows up.

The reason for such a fee: What most people fail to consider is that these people are working strictly on commission 90% of the time. When you are late for your appointment, or completely fail to arrive, especially without being kind enough to cancel or at the very least call to give the salon a heads up you're running behind, you are literally costing the hairdresser money. That time space was blocked strictly for you, which means nobody else could fill the spot.

Also, by being late, you potentially ran the hairdresser over and again, cost them another appointment/money, because they are having to extend your time without a raise in the profit.

So if you weren't informed about a policy, then no, it is not legal. At the very least it's bad business. However, if you were informed, even ask to hold with a credit card, then the salon is in the right.

Is it legal for a doctor to charge a late charge on a no show appointment?

Unfortunately, it is legal for a doctor to charge someone for an appointment even if they didn't show. This is because the missed appointment takes time and money away from the firm. Time: because they have to make follow up calls and reschedule the appointment. And Money: because they could have had another patient during your missed appointment. Since it has become common for people to miss their appointments it has become more common for doctors to charge anyway. You should reschedule the appointment a few days beforehand to give them time to find another patient for the alloted time.
