1. In Britain, there has to be a general election at least once every five years. Unlike in many other countries, the prime minister chooses the date of the election (within that maximum timespan). 2. The British government can be thrown out of office by Parliament.This last happened in March 1979, when Prime Minister James Callaghan was defeated on a vote of confidence, and a general election had to held. It should be pointed out that this is very unusual, and it's considered a pretty humiliating way for a government to go. Joncey
