A postscript to a will is called a codicil. A codicil amends, rather than replaces, and existing will. Each codicil must conform to the same legal requirements as the original will, such as the signatures of the testator and, typically, two or three disinterested witnesses.

A postscript to a will is called a codicil. To be valid it must comply with the same legal requirements as set out in the Wills Act 1837 IE it must be signed by the testator (or contains his/her mark) and witnessed by two independent witnesses. A witness forfeits their right to inherit from the will or codicil. However if a beneficiary witnesses a will and later a codicil is executed which is witnessed by two other witnesses (not the beneficiary who witnessed the will) then the forfeited legacy to that beneficiary in the will is revived provided the codicil includes the usual clause on the lines of "In all other respects I confirm my said will"
