Reasons that someone might be inclined to confess to a crime they did not commit?

A reason someone might confess is duress.Black's Law Dictionary (6th ed.) defines duress as "any unlawful threat or coercion used... to induce another to act [or not act] in a manner [they] otherwise would not [or would]." Another reason people might confess is because they are intoxicated and or under the influence of drugs.

The only reason someone would do this is because they are protecting the other person who commited the crime

okay for someone to be narrow minded and say the only reason to commit a crime is to protect another person is pretty silly really

there could be reason such as under duress where a third party may have a hold on the person confessing such as a threat or kidnapping.

involuntarily drug use where a third party feeds drugs to an unwilling person who confesses to the crime (it happen's).

there could be a psychological reason something even as simple as they where feeling guilty about a crime they heard where the confessor got away with in the past.

the human mind is a fascinating tool use common sense in deriving these answers i can guarantee there are a lot more answers to this question a single person can not simply derive all the answer his/or herself

confession under torture are two examples I can think of.

Acknowledging the defect helps one behave better in the future. Perhaps this is the basis of morals.
