Should private citizen be allowed to own firearms?

Whether he should or not will always be a debatable point The question should be is there an advantage to society in general or the safety to society in general if private citizen's own fire arms. Judging from the country's where it is not. it would seem that society in general would be better of and safer both from armed felons and more so from them selves if they did not have guns laying around the house. A good example would be the USA where there is a horrendous amount of gun violence perpetrated on Innocent members of the public not to mention the number of people that use guns to commit suicide. The concept behind the right to bear arms is to enable the private citizen to protect self from the government should the need come about, This is obviously nonsense.

It's a complicated question, Some people would argue that owning a gun makes you safer because you can protect yourself from criminals. I live in the UK, most people here don't own a gun, if someone breaks into my house to steal my telly and i find him, he knows I can't shoot him. All he has to do is knock me to the ground and run. In the US,if I find him I could shoot him, this means that he has to be able to shoot me first. Living in a land where guns are rare means the criminal is less likely to shoot, in a country where guns a everywhere, the criminal will shoot without thinking. To my mind this makes me safer in a land without universal gun ownership. as far as the criminal is concerned it's better to have me scared than to have me dead. In the US guns are everywhere so things are different, but if the criminal doesn't expect to be shot he doesn't need to shoot.
